Azulej, designed by Patricia Urquiola for Mutina, revisits the heritage of handcrafted hydraulic cement tiles, reinterpreting their charm through advanced digital printing on porcelain stoneware. Inspired by traditional Mediterranean maiolica, Azulej combines geometry, florals, lace patterns, and abstract motifs, creating a contemporary patchwork aesthetic rich in history and character.
Each 20×20 cm tile is decorated using Mutina’s cold digital printing glazing, allowing every pattern to retain an organic, naturally irregular appearance that mimics hand-made craftsmanship. The collection includes three base colours — Bianco, Grigio, and Nero — and a total of 27 registered graphic patterns, each designed to mix freely for endless compositions. Selected nine individual patterns per colour may also be used alone or in curated combinations for carpets, borders, feature walls, and highly decorative floors.
Rectified edges, neutral tones, and subtle textural layering give Azulej an artisanal yet modern quality, suitable for residential and commercial interiors, as well as outdoor walls and floors. Winner of the Wallpaper Design Award (2013)* and Interior Innovation Award (2014), Azulej remains one of Mutina’s most iconic and expressive decorative tile collections.
